A new storm system is expected to bring a widespread wintry mess of snow, sleet and freezing rain from the southern Plains and Southeast to the East Coast late this week into next weekend.

An area of low pressure will first spread snow across the Sierra Nevada Tuesday into Wednesday, then into the Four Corners region Thursday before a potential wintry mess spreads into the southern Plains, lower Ohio Valley and parts of the Southeast and mid-Atlantic into next weekend.

We are still several days away from this system arriving in the Plains and East, so many of the key forecast details remain uncertain, but the odds are increasing for a long swath of wintry precipitation.

Early Outlook

Tuesday-Thursday

- Snow is forecast to spread over California's Sierra Nevada Tuesday into Wednesday. Travel could be impacted in some of the passes in the region.
- Parts of the Four Corners region could then be dealing with snow from this system Thursday and Thursday night.

Friday

- Snow is possible from the southern Rockies into portions of Nebraska, Oklahoma, the Texas Panhandle and northwestern Arkansas.
- On the southern fringe of that snow swath, a wintry mix of sleet and freezing is possible, which could yield concerns of icing.
- Rain is expected farther south across Texas, Louisiana, southern Arkansas, Louisiana and Mississippi.

Saturday

- Snow is possible from parts of Nebraska, Oklahoma and the Texas Panhandle into the mid-Mississippi Valley, Tennessee and the southern Appalachians.
- A wintry mix of sleet and freezing rain will remain possible on the southern fringe of the snowfall, leading to potential icing concerns as far south as Oklahoma, Arkansas, Tennessee, northern Georgia and upstate South Carolina.
- Rain is forecast in the rest of the Southeast and along the northern Gulf Coast.

Sunday

- An area of snow or a wintry mix may stretch from northern Mississippi, northern Alabama and northern Georgia into southern portions of the mid-Atlantic region.
- Rain is expected in the rest of the Southeast.
- Precipitation from this system may reach parts of the Interstate 95 corridor, from Washington D.C. to New York City, Sunday night or Monday, but other details are uncertain at this time.
