Magnitude 8.0 Earthquake SMASHES Peru

Magnitude 8.0 Earthquake SMASHES Peru

An utterly horrific Magnitude 8.0 Earthquake has struck the country of Peru in South America.   The quake, which took place at a depth of 115km, has done damage on a scale that is hard to describe.   Buildings have collapsed. Roads have buckled.  Electricity, telephones, public water supplies, and natural gas supplies are all out.

Fears that "tens-of-thousands" are either dead already or trapped in rubble and will die within hours.

The quake took place at 07:41 UTC which translates to 3:41 AM eastern US time.

According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the quake was felt in all of northern Peru, western Brazil, most of Ecuador and parts of Colombia, as seen on the Shake Map Below:

A Magnitude 8.0 quake is mind-boggling in its power.  It is hard for the average person to grsp the enormous forces released when a quake of this size takes place; it actually affects the ENTIRE PLANET.

Proof of how powerful this particular quake was, it actually registered on almost all of the USA Seismograms used in the Advanced National Seismic Sensor (ANSS) Network.   The charts below show seismograms in the United States registering the quake (off the scale) in most areas of the USA, although actual shaking was NOT felt in the USA:
