Mt. Sinabung, a volcano in western Indonesia, erupted today with a major ash plume, rising to 55,000 feet (16.7 km) and Pyroclastic Flows of burning ash rushing down its sides.
Local residents were shocked when the eruption took place at about 0930 UTC Sunday. Some in nearby villages had only minutes to jump on motorcycles and speed away before the 800 degree Pyroclastic flows enveloped their homes, burning them to the ground in seconds.
